Unemployed Nerd Chronicles - Day 6: Home Stretch
Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 10:01PM Well I started Day 6 with some more Reese's Puffs, and a BBC show called Sherlock.
Sherlock is a modern version(in modern times that is) of Sherlock Holmes brought to us by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss some the writers behind Doctor Who, Jekyll, and the League of Gentlemen. The first season of this show was only 3 episodes each lasting 90 minutes. Kind of a more serious Doctor Who or House M.D. solving crimes. I originally watched these episodes a couple months ago, the first episode "A Study in Pink" was fantastic, really good. For the other two episodes I fell asleep, not because they were boring but because I was very sleepy. Especially damning in the last episode, I fell asleep halfway through a particularly interesting mystery, and the big reveal of Moriarty. I had been meaning to watch it for a while, and finally got to it. It was worth watching again it was excellent. Sherlock's street has been bombed and they found a letter calling him out to solve a mystery or else there will be another bombing. This continues for about 3 or 4 rounds, solving mysteries and stopping bombs, all distracting him away from the real important mystery. But to Sherlock these bombing mysteries are more fun. We find out Moriarty is involved (his name was dropped in episode 1) so Sherck becomes even more myopic on these other mysteries. But I won't be more descriptive than that cause the real fun is seeing how Holmes solves the various mysteries.
After that I jumped back into my seeming neverending quest to finish Dragon Age. Now that I have the dwarves support in battling the darkspawn, I could go to the capital city of Denerim to finally unseat Loghain who has been trying to usurp the throne, since the King died in battle partially due to Loghain leaving with the army at a critical juncture. His daughter the Queen has secretly been captured by one of Loghain's loyalists , my sources found out and I had to go in and rescue her. Along the way I found evidence of even more of Loghain's treatchery so I could sway people to my side at the upcoming landsmeet. I freed the Queen, getting her support in stopping her father. Then I had to stop a group of slavers who were tricking a bunch of elves into giving themselves over, with the promise of a cure to an outbrak of plaugue in their part of town. Of couse I found they had been given permission to do this by Loghain. Then the Landsmeet truely began, the people quickly turned against him once his evil doings were made public. I had to fight him in one on one combat for final judgement. I won easily and I could have spared him but he had done too much evil...unforgiveable. With him dead and still no King, my fellow Grey Warden Alistair(bastard brother of the King) was convinced to take throne of his brother beside the Queen, to keep peace in Fereldon. But of course we still have the Blight of the Darkspawn to end, and an Archdemon to slay. I stopped there since there was other buisness to attend to.
After a late lunch I was off to a comic store, not my normal shop but one a bit farther away called Earthworld Comics to see if they had Invincible Iron Man #500. Almost a year ago I decided to switch to getting the trade on that book, but I couldn't wait any longer. I went and found all 9 issues I missed, and it took 3 comic shops to find them all. I read them all right before #500 came out, but by the time I got to the comic store that Wednesday...sold out. Last week I found a copy at Electric City Comics, but they only had one copy and it was mangled up. But this week at Earth World I found a perfectly good copy so I can finally sit down and read that giant issue. I also bought a comic called "Li'l Depressed Boy" from Image Comics, saw a preview in another book, looked interesting. The main character looks like a ragdoll, but everyone else seems normal, it seems like a slice of life comic, but the main character looks odd.
I finished off the day watching TV, nothing nerdy really. But me and my gf watched did watch another episode of Star Trek: Next Gen. In this one a planet of Alien Africans steal Tasha Yar and want her to marry their leader. The leader's wife is pissed she might loose her standing, and challeneges Tasha to Mortal Kombat. A really bad fight sequence later, everything is fine. The episode was called "Code of Honor" if you ever see it, it feels like it might be kind of racist, but I'm not sure why...its a seriously wierd episode. But at least today Captain Picard didn't stand by and watch any ships explode today so thats good. Also this is like the 3rd time in the last four episodes Tasha has mentioned the Rape Gangs on the colony she was originally from...like she just won't shut up about them. It just seems wierd to hear the words "rape gangs" on this show, it just seems out of place, like in the Star Trek future they would call them something more sophisticated like "despoilment coalitions" (thanks thesaurus.com!). The episode also features a scene of Levar Burton doing the worst pretend shaving ever, and also has Data trying to be funny...observe!
This week is winding down only 1 more days left and I will be employed again. It is slightly bitersweet, but getting paid is way better than not getting paid. Till tomorrow...

Dude, Loghain is not a baron. He is a Teyrn -- Teryn Loghain Mac Tir. God...some nerd you are. ;)
PS: Try to spell Alistair right next time too. No 'E" please.
Thx for the info, I had subtitles set to the off position, so I didn't realize they weren't calling him a Baron. I fixed the article to reflect the new information.
