Comic Box Reviews 01/29/10 Part 1

Well I got my Giant Box o' Comics from DCBS this week, so for the next week I play catch up for Januarys books. So this will be a bunch of short reviews of stuff kind of as I read them.

Captain America: Reborn #6 - Big finale of this series, was big crazy action. For some reason its really weird to see Hitch draw the current Marvel universe. Like his version of the Wasp was good, but looked off to me I don't know why. And since when did Steve Rogers "A" on his head look like that? Not complaining just something I noticed. I thought Steve took out the Red Skull in his mind a little quickly, but the ensuing battle after was cool. This was an enjoyable series, but I'll never understand why this couldn't have been issues of the regular Captain America book, especially when they didn't publish Cap...I just think it interrupts the narrative flow of that book. It was a good mini, it would have been a mind-blowing arc in Captain America.

X-Factor #201 - I freaking loved issue #200, and this continues that great story of "The Invisible Woman is Missing". This will be my last issue of this book proper sadly, as I will be switching to trade. I love this book and Peter David has been knocking it out of the park for a while now. This new direction for the book seems like its gonna be loads of fun. Layla is still being used in interesting ways and the grouping of characters is great if not unexpected.

Uncanny X-Men #520 - Continuing the Nation X story, We got Colossus, Psylocke, and Wolverine combing NY to find Predator X and stumbling across the new villains of this arc. Then back in Utopia we have Cyclops giving Magneto a stern talking to about overstepping his boundaries and breaking the chain of command, which is both cool, and kind of hilarious to think about. Now Magneto has to prove himself trustworthy, and knowing what he's going to do to prove himself, I can't wait for it! If you can't tell, I'm enjoying this book. Fraction is doing a great job and I know people have issues with Greg Land, but this issue looks great and I think he keeps getting better.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31 - I'm enjoying this book, but the tone just feels really weird to me, not sure if its the art or the story. The dialog is top notch as always from Joss. Buffy had powers, but now she has super-powers. I'm interested to see how long that lasts and how it will play out as we head into the last or second to last story of "Season 8". We also have lot of emotional stuff going on with Buffy, Xander, and Dawn which is entertaining and feels genuine for these characters.

Ultimate Spider-Man #6 - Fun, thats all I have to say. This book is so much fun, and really is my favorite Bendis written book I think. This issue finishes up the set-up for the next presumably long run of this great book. We now have Spider-Man, Human Torch, Iceman, and Gwen Stacy all living with Aunt May and she sets them up as Peter's cousins which is kind of hilarious and they even recognize how crazy that is. This Ultimate version of Mysterio looks like he's gonna be around for a while, taking up the Kingpin role. This is possibly my last issue of this series as I again think this will be better for me in Trades or HC, I'm thinking that way about the whole Ultimate line right now. I'll try and sell these issues and go from there.

Thats all I've read so far, more in the coming days...I got a lot of stuff this shipment hoo boy. And man that is Marvel heavy, Gotta get me some more DC love going on.

Pull List 01/20/2010

Lots of good books this week, here is what I'll be getting, from my local shop and dcbs my online dealer. Also stuff I would have gotten, but I'm dropping it as of this month, with an explanation as to why. All of this totally unoriginal though, because I stole this idea from richlovatt.com who is a cool guy and you should read his blog as well, or follow him on Twitter at @RichL1

Amazing Spider-Man #618 - First part of a Mysterio arc by Dan Slott and Marcos Martin. One of the most consistently good books on the market. The last issue with the Rhino by Joe Kelly was a masterpiece, hoping this is just as good, I'm a huge Slott fan, and Marcos can draw like an SOB so outlook is good.

Avengers Vs Agents Of Atlas #1 - [dcbs] One of my online pulls, and one of my favorite books of this year, now relegated to these VS mini-series and backups. Its gonna be a fun read, I just wish they had at least put kept going with all this in the Agents of Atlas regular series.

Batman Streets Of Gotham #8 - Probably my favorite of all the Batman titles out right now, they are building a creepy story with Mr. Zsasz, and the Manhunter backups are sweet!

Blackest Night The Flash #2 (OF 3) - [dcbs] Johns + Kolins + Flash Rouge's = Awesome

Brave And The Bold #31 - [tradewait] I've been enjoying these one off stories from JMS, don't know how long its going on for. I've decided to wait for this stuff to be collected as of this issue.

Dark Avengers Siege #13 - I love me some Bendis Avengers, and now that Siege has begun, this Shit just got REAL. Also we're supposed to finally find out what the Sentry's deal is. Can't wait

Green Lantern Corps #44 - Its a Green Lantern book, and we're in the middle of Blackest Night, its awesome.

Joe The Barbarian #1 (OF 8) - [dcbs] Grant Morrisons's new series I'm doing a 1st issue try out on this, got this issue for a Quarter on DCBS. If I like it then I'll get the HC or TPB

Mighty Avengers #33 - Another Slott book, with some good old superhero fun. They just announced all the Avengers book will end along with Siege. You know Bendis isn't goin anywhere but I hope Slott still has a Avengers book when Siege is all over.

Rebels Tp Vol 01 The Coming Of Starro - Heard a lot about this series, been pretty excited to read it. I don't know if I'll buy it this week but I'll be putting it aside this week. I got a Deluxe Tom Strong HC waiting as well.

Uncanny X-Men #520 - [dcbs] Love it, love it, love me some X-men. Fraction has been knocking it out of the park. I get all my X-Books online, and it kills me cause they are so good and I want to read them right away.

Only one book dropped this week. But I'm starting to switch to Trades on a lot of stuff, so more will be dropped soon.

Looks Can Kill...Morons

Check out this article from CNN.com: "Audiences Experience 'Avatar' Blues"

Now I enjoyed Avatar, but this is insane, there are too many foolish people. Besides the fact that of course Pandora looks perfect, that was the concept when it was created on cold unfeeling computers! "The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth." What kind of madness is that, we don't have huge crazy forests? These people need a slap to the face, and then make them watch Planet Earth in HD. Morons!!

These Nerds Are Right! - Episode 2: We Keep on Trying

A long time in coming now, Me and Chad having some General Comics conversation, I recount a my experience at the Wild Pig Sale in Jersey I went to, and plenty of books we both read. We're a bit drunker than before, with some of the brews Chad has concocted (I helped).

I guess I should post...

Well I now suppose I have to post, I finally redesigned this place made a banner I'm happy with. And my friend Matt linked me so now I feel obligated to get started early. Right now I just have a couple episodes of my podcast "These Nerds are Right" where it's me and my buddy Chad talking comics. But more to come as I want to write on each one of my topics every week. Throw out my own ideas, and hopefully have some fun debate.

I've got a couple articles in the works right now. For comics, it's a series catching up with the Punisher and his current series. Some movie reviews for Labyrinth and hopefully Avatar. Some political rants here and there of course. And more podcasts! So please keep checking back her cause until I'm proven wrong...
