Comic Box Reviews 01/29/10 Part 1
Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 9:55AM Well I got my Giant Box o' Comics from DCBS this week, so for the next week I play catch up for Januarys books. So this will be a bunch of short reviews of stuff kind of as I read them.
Captain America: Reborn #6 - Big finale of this series, was big crazy action. For some reason its really weird to see Hitch draw the current Marvel universe. Like his version of the Wasp was good, but looked off to me I don't know why. And since when did Steve Rogers "A" on his head look like that? Not complaining just something I noticed. I thought Steve took out the Red Skull in his mind a little quickly, but the ensuing battle after was cool. This was an enjoyable series, but I'll never understand why this couldn't have been issues of the regular Captain America book, especially when they didn't publish Cap...I just think it interrupts the narrative flow of that book. It was a good mini, it would have been a mind-blowing arc in Captain America.
X-Factor #201 - I freaking loved issue #200, and this continues that great story of "The Invisible Woman is Missing". This will be my last issue of this book proper sadly, as I will be switching to trade. I love this book and Peter David has been knocking it out of the park for a while now. This new direction for the book seems like its gonna be loads of fun. Layla is still being used in interesting ways and the grouping of characters is great if not unexpected.
Uncanny X-Men #520 - Continuing the Nation X story, We got Colossus, Psylocke, and Wolverine combing NY to find Predator X and stumbling across the new villains of this arc. Then back in Utopia we have Cyclops giving Magneto a stern talking to about overstepping his boundaries and breaking the chain of command, which is both cool, and kind of hilarious to think about. Now Magneto has to prove himself trustworthy, and knowing what he's going to do to prove himself, I can't wait for it! If you can't tell, I'm enjoying this book. Fraction is doing a great job and I know people have issues with Greg Land, but this issue looks great and I think he keeps getting better.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #31 - I'm enjoying this book, but the tone just feels really weird to me, not sure if its the art or the story. The dialog is top notch as always from Joss. Buffy had powers, but now she has super-powers. I'm interested to see how long that lasts and how it will play out as we head into the last or second to last story of "Season 8". We also have lot of emotional stuff going on with Buffy, Xander, and Dawn which is entertaining and feels genuine for these characters.
Ultimate Spider-Man #6 - Fun, thats all I have to say. This book is so much fun, and really is my favorite Bendis written book I think. This issue finishes up the set-up for the next presumably long run of this great book. We now have Spider-Man, Human Torch, Iceman, and Gwen Stacy all living with Aunt May and she sets them up as Peter's cousins which is kind of hilarious and they even recognize how crazy that is. This Ultimate version of Mysterio looks like he's gonna be around for a while, taking up the Kingpin role. This is possibly my last issue of this series as I again think this will be better for me in Trades or HC, I'm thinking that way about the whole Ultimate line right now. I'll try and sell these issues and go from there.
Thats all I've read so far, more in the coming days...I got a lot of stuff this shipment hoo boy. And man that is Marvel heavy, Gotta get me some more DC love going on.
